Self-Care

My brain is tired today. How about you? Fatigue is the most commonly reported medical symptom. For me physical fatigue is rarely the issue, though. Cognitive and visual fatigue are what usually ails me. Sometimes it's mild enough that an hour or so rest break 1-3 times a day will ease it enough that I can continue on with the day but a few times a month or so I have the all-day kind which means rest and recovery is the primary goal for the day.

This is because I suffered a concussion 5 years ago and went on to experience post-concussion syndrome with vision disorder among other things. I am significantly more functional than I was even 2 years ago. Will I ever return to 100%? I think discovering life on Mars is more likely than that but them's the breaks! I think most people who have chronic medical issues would agree that there is not as much wiggle room when it comes to things like endurance as when a person is healthy. It seems any system that doesn't work as designed requires more energy, leaving little to no extra energy to draw on. There's no reserve in the tank!

That's how it is. So a person must make accommodations as needed. Self-care is not optional. If I plan on functioning tomorrow when I have a meeting and a rehearsal, then I need to have today to rest and recover from our busy Sunday at church.

So, my friends, since my brain is running a lil' rough today, we will tackle bigger things tomorrow! Make sure YOU do what is required to care for yourself, as well. We are not helpful to others if we don't put on our own oxygen mask first!
